Where is Liverpool?

Liverpool is a city and borough in Merseyside, England, overlooking the Irish Sea. It is also located on the east side of the Mersey Estuary, which divides the city from the Wirral Peninsula. It lies 176 miles northwest of London and 35 miles west of Manchester.

Living in Liverpool

Boasting Tudor buildings, 18th Century architecture, and contemporary gems, Liverpool is an intriguing hybrid of the old and new worlds. It also claims thousands of listed buildings, beats Bath in terms of Georgian homes and contains sculptures to rival the number found in Westminster. No wonder certain areas have achieved status as UNESCO World Heritage sites.

In the past, Liverpool’s economy was fuelled by its port and its development as an industrial powerhouse. Once a setting off point for North America, today the city welcomes cruise ships as well as trade. Combining access by ship and ferry with a reputation for hosting a plethora of musical and artistic talent extending beyond the Beatles and Premier League football teams, it’s no wonder the city is now a thriving tourist hotspot.

Liverpool has some other great features too, such as its extensive range of historic parks and gardens and long-established multi-cultural communities that arose from its maritime links. After celebrating 800 years as a city, Liverpool was granted the title of European Capital of Culture in 2008, which helped birth a new era for the local economy.
