Living in Woolwich – What to expect

Woolwich has plenty of big plus points – it’s well-connected, affordable, exciting, and close to the river. It’s also surprisingly pretty, given its history as London’s main military arsenal and munitions production centre. Today, the bomb and bullet factories are long gone, replaced with smart riverside apartment towers, gastropubs and regenerated spaces for fitness, the arts and independent commercial spaces to thrive.

Is Woolwich an up and coming area?

Woolwich has ben regarded as an ‘up and comer’ for years. However, we think that it has now truly ‘arrived’. Perhaps the biggest recent change to the Woolwich landscape is the Woolwich Works Project. Opened in September 2021, this is a massive undertaking by the Royal Borough of Greenwich to create a new landmark cultural hub in Woolwich. It involved the restoration of five major buildings of historic significance in the Royal Arsenal area. Now complete, it represents a 15,000-square-metre complex of theatres, dance studios and prime retail space.

What makes Woolwich a good place to live?

Woolwich Works is just the latest of the many large-scale developments that have made Woolwich into a highly desirable destination. It already has great Underground and rail connections. Also, the opening of the Elizabeth Line has made Woolwich even more accessible, with direct access to and from Central London. As an added bonus, London City airport is literally just over the river.

There are also plenty of great parks and green spaces in the area. These include Woolwich Common, and Woolwich Park, with Greenwich Park just a short drive/tube journey away.
