Why live in South Bank?

South Bank is rightly called the ‘culture capital’ of London. This is high praise indeed, when London contains the most theatres, museums, art galleries and other cultural attractions of all the UK’s cities. This makes South Bank a cultural epicentre, where you can find the most incredible artistic experiences and attractions everywhere you look. The London Eye, Shakespeare’s Globe, the Young and Old Vic, and innumerable art galleries big and small – it’s a creative person’s dream place to live and explore.

South Bank also has the enviable ‘riverside culture’ vibe going for it. Cafes, restaurants, pubs and bars, you can eat drink and be merry overlooking the beautiful wide sweep of the Thames. This also makes it a wonderful place to walk through at your own pace, whatever the season.

The retail experience is second to none too. Whatever you’re looking for in terms of high-street retail brands and experiences, the South Bank can provide. Not only that, the Southbank Centre Book Market is the only second-hand and antique outdoor book market in southern England. Occurring seven days per week under the Waterloo Bridge, it’s well worth the trip for a chat and a rummage!

South Bank is also a great place to base yourself if you want to experience Central London to the fullest. Major attractions like Trafalgar Square, Big Ben, St Paul’s Cathedral and Covent Garden are all within a 10-minute walk. Within 20 minutes, you can hit practically any sightseeing hotspot. This means that the best of London is right within easy reach, if not right on your doorstep.

So if you want the definitive ‘London lifestyle’ that puts you right in the middle of the action, South Bank perfectly fits the bill.

Transport in South Bank

Being a Zone 1 cultural and tourism magnet, it’s not surprising that South Bank is very well connected to the London transport network. Firstly, it has Waterloo Station right at its heart, making it a hub for national rail and London Underground services.

There are also the underground stations of Lambeth North and Southwark. Between them and Waterloo, they provide ample access to any compass point in the capital. This also makes South Bank among the best-covered areas of South London for tube access. You’ll find that bus links are plentiful too, as are viable, well-maintained cycle routes.

Finally, if you want to cross the river in style, the Thames Clippers are a fun, inexpensive alternative to the tube or a taxi.

Is South Bank London Expensive? Property prices in South Bank

It will come as no surprise to hear that buying property in South Bank is not cheap. It’s a highly desirable prospect, and one of the most iconic areas in the capital. Accordingly, Rightmove’s October 2024 house price average for South Bank is almost £827,000.

However, this is just what you’re likely to pay on average for a flat. New build developments offering ultra-modern apartments dominate the South Bank property market. Larger houses, few in number, easily stretch into the millions of pounds. Don’t expect to find a mysteriously cheap property in South Bank, where practically every inch is prime real estate.

As for renting, South Bank offers a touch more flexibility. While the median rental rate across the South Bank and its surrounding borough is a steep £3,299 per calendar month, there are more ‘inexpensive’ options, ranging from around £2,600 per calendar month. Still, there’s nothing bargain-basement about the South Bank.
